Leadership is different from supervision, superintendence or authority. It is a more organic and more humane concept. Leadership is not a position as such, rather it is a character that translates in action. This character has a lot of ethical and behavioural elements. It is more about people and process and less about the materialistic resources.
Leadership is also different from Team work. Team work involves collaboration, bonding and cooperation to amplify the output. But leadership gives vision and motivation to the team. However these both are like two sides of the same coin. Both these factors are coexistent and symbiotic.
Leadership becomes more critical when there is no formal team or organisational structure. In a group of equal people, it is very important to lead the group without disturbing the team equation. It leads a lot of convincing and communicating in such situations. Even in formal groups, leadership demands excellent communication skills.
Decision making is another crucial factor that impacts leadership quality. Not only the correctness of the decision but the way decision is made is also of importance. Though consensus is often considered to be the best way to make decisions, there are always some differences in a group or team. Leader is not supposed to wait for consensus but is expected to mould the consensus and decide accordingly.
Leadership is a very important trait that one needs to achieve success. It is a tricky and challenging job to lead in true sense. As a famous quote goes, the challenge of leadership is to be strong but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not a bully; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant; have humor, but without folly.
