The Power Of Now

“The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle is a spiritual self-help guide to help us discover our true Being, release our pain and find deep inner peace. This book states that living in the now is the most authentic path to happiness and enlightenment. When we are intensely present in the Now, we respond from deep consciousness and flow with ease and joy in life. In so doing, we can better fulfil our outer purpose: to achieve goals and seek to create a better world, while fulfilling our inner purpose and truly changing the world at cause.

Highlights:

  • By focusing only on the present – and ignoring the past or future – you can greatly improve your life. As the past and future are simply alternative versions of the present, there are no advantages to worrying about them.
  • Your mind is the primary origin of pain. So, if you allow your ego to take over, you will endure considerably more pain.
  • Enlightenment may seem like a superhuman accomplishment, but it’s your natural state of oneness with Being. Just like the Buddha said, it’s “the end of suffering.”
  • Any action is often better than no action, especially if you have been stuck in an unhappy situation for a long time. If it is a mistake, at least you learn something, in which case it’s no longer a mistake. If you remain stuck, you learn nothing.
  • Realize deeply that the present moment is all you have.  Make the “Now” the primary focus of your life. If you can simply focus on the present, you will only deal with minor problems as they arise. You can break a challenging task into several minor challenges.
  • Accept — then act. Whatever the present moment contains, accept it as if you had chosen it.  Always work with it, not against it. Make it your friend and ally, not your enemy. This will miraculously transform your whole life.
  • If you get the inside right, the outside will fall into place. Primary reality is within; secondary reality without.
  • If your mind carries a heavy burden of past, you will experience more of the same.  The past perpetuates itself through lack of presence. Where there is anger there is always pain underneath.
  • It’s essential to bring more consciousness into your everyday life, especially when things are going smoothly. The quality of your consciousness at this moment is what shapes the future.
  • Nothing has happened in the past; it happened in the Now.  Nothing will ever happen in the future; it will happen in the Now.
